A recipe for Broodje Hagelslag (Dutch Bread with Sprinkles)! Slices of bread are topped with butter and sprinkles for a fun breakfast treat.
While visiting Amsterdam, a highlight of our morning was a breakfast spread with a basket of bread and pastries, butter, peanut butter, cheese, and often Hagelslag! It was such a perfect start to our day.
Translating to hailstorm, hagelslag are sprinkles made from chocolate or other flavors. We came across an abundance of varieties of these delicious sprinkles during our time in the Netherlands at the cafes and grocery stores.
Flavors include (but definitely not limited to) milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, vanilla, apple, elderberry, strawberry, raspberry, and even anise (popular following the birth of a baby). The shapes vary widely too. My personal favorite are Chocoladevlokken (chocolate flakes) or Vlokfeest (a combination of white and milk chocolate flakes).
The kids love Boterham met Pindakaas en Hagelslag (Bread with Peanut Butter and Sprinkles) using white bread, but I particularly enjoy Beschuit (Dutch Rusk) or sourdough.
The measurements for the ingredients I listed work well for my slice of bread. They may vary a little if your slice is larger or smaller or based on personal preference.
Notable Ingredients
Higher quality ingredients will make the Boterham met Hagelslag even more delicious. Try to use a creamy European butter if it is available.
Hagelslag are often found in Dutch markets or grocery stores with western European ingredients. If you are in the Los Angeles area, Holland International Market in Bellflower has a whole aisle filled with an abundance of Chocoladehagel, Vruchten Hagel, Vlokken, Muisjes, and more. They also ship within the United States.

Thank you for a terrific recipe. One of my best friends lives in The Hague, and this Dutch bread reminds me of some of the treats we’ve had together. Another winner from Tara’s Multicultural Table!
