A recipe for Fairy Bread! This Australian treat covers slices of bread with a layer of softened butter and plenty of colorful hundreds and thousands.
While living in Los Angeles, Claire developed a love for Fairy Bread after trying it at a few different Australian coffee shops.
A more colorful cousin to the Dutch Broodje Hagelslag, this fun bread is covered with an abundance of rainbow nonpareils (hundred and thousands or 100’s and 1000’s). It is especially popular during birthday parties and celebrations in Australia and New Zealand.
We have yet to come across Fairy Bread since moving to the DC area (if you know of a spot, please let me know!). So today, I am sharing the incredibly easy recipe. Only 3 ingredients and no more than 5 minutes.
Simply top white sandwich bread with softened butter, dip in a bowl filled with hundreds and thousands, and cut into triangles before serving.
A Few Fairy Bread Tips
The measurements for the ingredients I listed work well for basic sandwich slices. They may vary a little if your bread is larger or smaller.
Make sure the butter is completely softened to room temperature. Otherwise it may tear the bread when you try to spread it across.
When I make Broodje Hagelslag, I drizzle the sprinkles over the bread. I do not do this for Fairy Bread. The one time I tried, my vacuum ended up eating sprinkles for days. For best results, pour the hundreds and thousands in a wide rimmed bowl, then dip the bread, buttered side down, into the nonpareils while very lightly pressing until completely covered.
Cut the bread on the diagonal either once or twice to make 2-4 triangles.
Some like to remove the crust first. I personally like to keep the crust on to have a spot to hold the bread without getting food coloring all over my fingers.
If avoiding dairy, make sure the bread has no dairy products in the ingredients and swap the butter for margarine.
For best results, serve the Fairy Bread immediately after assembling.

I am of Dutch heritage.this is a very popular breakfast in the Netherlands.
I think chocolate sprinkles are the most popular. Blue sprinkles if I boy is born,
and pink for girls. Dutch stores carry all kinds of them.We are so put cookies on our bread. That was a favourite of mine.It had to be the Dutch windmill cookies.
It sure brings me back to my childhood.

The grandkids are going to love this one! It’ll be a special treat at grandma’s house. I just need to convince them to keep it a secret from their mom LOL.
