This Red, White, and Blueberry Smoothie is a fun layered drink for the Fourth of July or any time of year! There is not much work involved, but each layer does need to be frozen before topping with the next to keep the distinct colors.
The bottom layer is created by blending together fresh blueberries, a little honey, yogurt, and just enough milk to allow the mixture to easily pour into the bottom of the glass. Be careful to not let it hit the sides as your pour!
The middle is made with banana, yogurt, honey, milk, and a splash of vanilla extract (or you can use vanilla-flavored yogurt). Adjust the honey or sugar as desired to taste. The milk can also be substituted with your favorite dairy-free option.
Top off the smoothie with the strawberry layer blended with more yogurt, honey, and milk.
A Few Tips
Serve the smoothie immediately after adding the strawberry layer or freeze for up to two days. If freezing for later, it will need to defrost until drinkable with an almost slushy consistency.
The amount of time needed to defrost will depend on the size of your glasses. I have made this Red, White, and Blueberry before in mini glasses and it took about 15 minutes. The larger glasses featured in the photos needed to sit at room temperature for closer to 30 minutes.
To add a little extra fun, I decorated the glasses with a colorful red, white, and blue nonpareils rim before adding the smoothie.
In a shallow bowl or plate, mix together 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon water to make a smooth paste. Place the nonpareils in another shallow bowl.
Dip the rim of each glass in the powdered sugar paste to evenly coat, then immediately roll in the nonpareils.
If you don’t have fresh berries available, you can substitute with frozen. The amount of milk may need to be adjusted. The strawberries can also be swapped for raspberries.
I served the Red, White, and Blueberry Smoothies in Libbey Classic Can Tumbler Glasses.
