Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 1/3 cup (80 milliliters) milk
  • 1/3 cup (80 milliliters) heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup (60 milliliters) fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon (15 grams) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 8 slices thick (at least 1/2 inch, 1.25 centimeters) bread

Optional Toppings:

  • Whipped Cream
  • Powdered sugar
  • Butter
  • Orange Slices
  • Maple Syrup
  • Fresh mint

Instructions

  • In a large, wide bowl, whisk together the eggs, orange zest, milk, cream, orange juice, vanilla extract, and salt.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter and vegetable oil over medium-low heat.
  • Once the butter is melted and the pan is hot, soak one slice of bread in the egg and milk mixture for about 30 seconds per side.
  • Cook until golden, about 2 minutes per side. Adjust the heat between medium and low to create a golden color and thoroughly heated bread without burning.
  • Repeat with remaining slices of bread, adding additional butter and vegetable oil to the pan as needed.
  • Serve immediately with whipped cream, powdered sugar, butter, orange slices, and/or maple syrup and other desired toppings.
