Evan recently celebrated his 10th birthday! He decided he wanted a Minecraft-themed cake, put together a design, and called it a Minecraft Adventure Cake.
We tried our best to create a cake as close to the drawing as possible and were both so excited with the results!
Stacking the Cakes
For the base, we used a combination of vanilla and chocolate cakes.
I baked two 8 inch (20 centimeter) square vanilla cakes, one 8 inch (20 centimeter) square chocolate cake, one 6 inch (15 centimeter) square vanilla cake, and one 6 inch (15 centimeter) square chocolate cake.
We stacked the two larger vanilla cakes on top of each other with a layer of the cookies and cream frosting in the center.
Then, I cut the larger chocolate cake into two equal pieces and stacked those with layers of the frosting over the back side of the vanilla cake base. A serrated bread knife is helpful to cut the cakes into the desired sizes with clean edges.
I cut the smaller 6 inch (15 centimeter) cakes into thirds and stacked those with layers of frosting along the left side of the cake in three layers. These were not as stable, so I used wooden dowels and plenty of frosting to hold them together.
After stacking everything, we covered the entire outside of the cake with the rest of the frosting. This is important to get the fondant to stick.
Fondant Squares
This was actually my first time working with fondant, so it was quite the interesting challenge! To help go with the Minecraft theme, we covered the cake in lots and lots and lots of small individual squares in a variety of colors.
A friend came over to help for much of the day and it is definitely more fun/less tedious as a group project (and more hands) working with so many squares.
I used store-bought white, green, and brown fondant, then dyed the rest of the colors using this ChefMaster Liqua-gel Food Color Set.
When mixing the colors (start with a drop or two at a time) into the fondant, wear food-safe gloves. Don’t be like me and accidentally put a used glove back on inside-out. It takes lots of scrubbing to get the color out of skin.
I came across these Square Cookie Cutters and they were incredibly helpful in easily making everything equal. The package had three different sizes. We used mostly the larger cutter with the medium squares in a couple of the more tight areas.
For the Minecraft Adventure Cake, Evan put together a few different elements of Minecraft all in one cake.
We had a mixture of lava (orange and red fondant squares), water (blue) sand, stone, dirt, grass, end stone (supposed to be a pale greenish yellow), and Nether brick (dark brown) covering the entire cake. He even arranged a Nether Portal with black and purple squares.
Fondant Details
For a few extra details, Evan made a Wither, Creeper, boats, Nether Fortress arches, Ender Dragon, Obsidian Pillars, and Ender Crystals with the fondant too.
Around the sides of the cake, he added more squares, a boat, and placed a creeper in the boat. We ran out of time, but it would have been fun to make a few fish, dolphins, or sea turtles for even more detail.
Overall, it was such a fun project and I loved the variety of elements packed into the cake.
Happy Birthday Evan!
