A recipe for an Irish Crisp Sandwich! This quick and easy sandwich is packed with Irish butter and potato chips.

Irish Crisp Sandwich cut in half and stacked next to a pile of potato chips.

If you are looking for a quick option for St. Patrick’s Day, this Irish Crisp Sandwich is perfect for celebrating or to enjoy any time of year as an easy snack or lunch.

All you need are two slices of white sandwich bread, some Irish butter, and potato chips (crisps)- preferably also Irish.

Simply spread the butter evenly across the top of each slice of bread. Top one butter-covered slice with the crisps/potato chips. I used 25 grams (0.88 ounces) of crisps- about 1 cup or a large handful.

Place the other slice, butter-side down over the crisps, cut in half if desired, and serve immediately.

A Few Irish Crisp Sandwich Tips

Aerial view of Irish Crisp Sandwich with one slice of bread covered in butter and the other slice covered in potato chips.

This sandwich is best with a white sandwich bread- preferably medium slice about 1/2 inch (1.25 centimeters) thick.

Make sure the butter is completely softened at room temperature before spreading. This will keep the soft, fluffy bread from tearing.

This recipe is enough to make one Irish Crisp Sandwich. The ingredients can easily be doubled, tripled, etc to make more as desired for multiple people.

Mairéad of Irish American Mom recommends using Tayto Cheese and Onion Crisps. Due to the popularity of this brand, they are often called Tayto Sandwiches.

While looking into crisp sandwiches, I found so many very strongly opinionated and differing advice.

Some insist on cutting the sandwich in half crosswise, while others say into triangles.

Another area of contrasting views was whether to crush the crisps before adding them to the sandwich.

What a fun idea! I’ve used chips in sandwiches before but not as the star! Love all of those ideas!

Crisp sandwiches are the food of my childhood. I used to regularly have one of these when I got home from school.

Love the contrast between the crunch and the soft white bread. My fave is with salt and vinegar Tayto crisps!
